K\u00e4thriin Steinberg graduated from the Purchasing and Procurement programme at TTK University of Applied Sciences in February 2025. Although her studies have come to an end, her connection with the university remains strong. Today, she contributes to TTK as a guest lecturer and project manager, while also playing an active role in the Engineering Academy.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Conscious Choice of Study Programme<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When finishing high school, K\u00e4thriin took a systematic approach to choosing her future path. She went through the full list of programmes offered by universities and higher education institutions across Estonia, narrowing it down to four or five that interested her the most. In the end, she applied to two: Purchasing and Procurement at TTK and Public Relations at Tallinn University.\r\n\r\n\u201cI was accepted into both, but at that moment the TTK programme felt more practical and relevant,\u201d she recalls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like many first-year students, she found navigating the campus more challenging than expected. \u201cIt was actually quite difficult to figure out where everything was in the building,\u201d she says. To make her first day easier, she reached out the night before to a future classmate\u2014still a complete stranger at the time\u2014and suggested they go to school together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt felt much less intimidating going together,\u201d she says, recommending the same approach to today\u2019s freshmen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The structure of her studies allowed her to take part in a wide range of extracurricular activities. K\u00e4thriin was involved in the TTK Marketing Club, helped organise the Engineering Career Day, and contributed to several initiatives within the Engineering Academy.\r\n\r\n\u201cThe right opportunities will find you\u2014you just need the courage to say yes,\u201d she explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two moments from her studies stand out in particular, both of which she also mentioned in her graduation speech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOne of the most memorable experiences was organising an entrepreneurship inspiration day together with our entire class,\u201d she says. \u201cIt was incredible to see how our group dynamic evolved\u2014we became much more united, and we learned so much about ourselves and each other along the way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another highlight came during the thesis defences. \u201cWe were all eagerly waiting for each other\u2019s results and celebrated every success with applause, as if it were our own,\u201d she recalls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lecturers Who Made an Impact<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

One of the most influential figures during her studies was Anneli Ramjalg, a leading lecturer at TTK\u2019s Institute of Civil Engineering.\r\n\r\n\u201cShe\u2019s someone who truly stayed with me\u2014such a sincere and kind person,\u201d K\u00e4thriin says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also highlights the contribution of Ivika Uslov, a development specialist at the Centre for Humanities and Economics.\r\n\r\n\u201cShe was our biggest supporter when we organised the entrepreneurship inspiration day. To me, she\u2019s one of the warmest and most positive people at the university.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What She Took from TTK<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

One of the most valuable skills K\u00e4thriin developed during her studies was confidence in public speaking.\r\n\r\n\u201cWe had to give quite a lot of presentations, and at the time I didn\u2019t enjoy it at all,\u201d she admits. \u201cBut now it\u2019s much easier, and it\u2019s been incredibly useful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her advice is simple: practice makes perfect\u2014and sometimes the most important thing is just having the courage to speak up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking back, she values the connections and relationships she built the most. If she had to sum up her years at TTK in a few words, she wouldn\u2019t hesitate: transformative and exciting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also considers the strong practical focus of the curriculum to be one of TTK\u2019s greatest strengths.\r\n\r\n\u201cThe biggest advantage of TTK is the amount of practical experience\u2014both in class and outside of it,\u201d she says. \u201cThat\u2019s what makes graduates stand out to employers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Student to Contributor\u2014and Back Again<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Even today, K\u00e4thriin remains closely involved with TTK. In the past autumn semester, she worked as a guest lecturer at the Institute of Logistics, teaching second- and third-year students. The experience gave her a new perspective on teaching and deepened her appreciation for the work of lecturers.\r\n\r\nInterestingly, her return to the university had been predicted\u2014during the 2025 Engineering Career Day, someone suggested she would soon find her way back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to teaching, she has worked as a project manager for several TTK events, including the TTK 110 alumni reunion, the career specialists\u2019 information day \u201cEngineering That Works\u201d, and the inspiration day for girls \u201cThe Future Is in the Hands of Women Engineers!\u201d\r\n\r\nWithin the Engineering Academy, she coordinates school visits to TTK and helps organise the university\u2019s participation in career events across Estonia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With so much ongoing involvement, TTK remains a central part of her daily life. As a result, she says she doesn\u2019t yet fully feel like an alumna\u2014her connection to the university is still very much alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alongside her work, K\u00e4thriin is currently studying prerequisite courses in law at Tallinn University, with the goal of applying to a master\u2019s programme in law.\r\n\r\n\u201cOnce I\u2019ve completed my master\u2019s degree, it would be exciting to consider a role such as a procurement lawyer\u2014combining both of my fields of study,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Giving Back as an Alumna<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

K\u00e4thriin believes alumni play an important role in supporting both current students and recent graduates, particularly through guest lecturing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen I was in that position myself, I felt the connection with students was different\u2014I had already gone through the same journey, while they were still in the middle of it,\u201d she explains.\r\n\r\nThis shared understanding created a more open and trusting atmosphere. \u201cWe understood each other almost instantly,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to K\u00e4thriin, students are especially interested in practical insights.\r\n\r\n\u201cThey want to hear real-life experiences. There\u2019s already plenty of theory,\u201d she says. \u201cThe most engaging part is hearing people\u2019s actual stories.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also emphasises that entering the job market doesn\u2019t start after graduation.\r\n\r\n\u201cGraduates obviously need jobs, but in reality, that process begins much earlier. Often, the right opportunity comes through an internship.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For this reason, she encourages alumni to actively offer and promote internship opportunities within their organisations\u2014helping students gain valuable experience and often take their first steps into their careers.\r\n\r\nEvents like the annual Engineering Career Day at TTK provide an excellent platform for this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Advice to Students<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

K\u00e4thriin\u2019s message to current students is clear and encouraging: \u201cDon\u2019t be afraid of anything. A test, exam, or even your final thesis grade doesn\u2019t define you. What really matters are the knowledge and skills you gain\u2014and the kind of person you become.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
