Students at the Tallinn main campus of TTK University of Applied Sciences began the new academic year with a newly renovated library, offering a wider range of spaces for studying, group work and relaxation. The redesigned library was created with students’ needs in mind, aiming to provide a welcoming, café-like atmosphere where people can comfortably study and spend time.

According to Siret Remmelg, Head of the Library, the main goal of the renovation was to transform the library into a place where people would want to spend time, not only studying but also relaxing and socialising. Inspiration came from cosy bookshops and cafés where visitors can enjoy a coffee, browse books, work independently or meet friends.

Meeting students’ needs was particularly important, as they often spend long days in the library studying, working on group assignments and taking breaks between lectures. Before the renovation, students were asked which facilities they felt were missing most. The need for more group study rooms and quieter study areas was mentioned repeatedly.

New spaces support different ways of learning

The renovated library offers a more varied learning environment, including options for those who prefer studying on a soft sofa or in a comfortable armchair rather than sitting at a traditional desk.
“Not everyone needs to study in the same way. We wanted to create opportunities for independent study, collaboration and relaxation, so that everyone can find a space and an approach that suits them,” explained Remmelg.

Three new group study rooms have been created, named Mets (Forest), Mänd (Pine) and Tamm (Oak). The largest of these features movable modular furniture, allowing the space to be rearranged as needed. This makes it suitable for larger group projects, presentations and discussions.

In addition to the group study rooms, the library now features a relaxation room called Sammal (Moss), furnished with comfortable seating where students can take a break from their studies. A soundproof booth is also available, providing a quiet space for up to two people to study or attend online meetings.

Accessibility and safety were also taken into account during the renovation. A ramp has been installed at the entrance, while low steps make it easier to move around. The shelving was designed with ease of use in mind, ensuring that books are readily accessible to all library users.

A place people enjoy visiting

The renovated library is intended for the entire TTK community, including both students and staff.
“We want the library to become a natural part of everyday life at the university – a place people are always happy to visit,” said Remmelg.

The library at the Tallinn main campus is located on level 0 of the building and is open on weekdays from 9:00 to 17:00.
