At the beginning of 2025, TTK University of Applied Sciences and Viimsi Municipality signed a cooperation agreement aimed at improving traffic safety and promoting sustainable mobility in the municipality. Now that the traffic project has been completed, students presented the results of their work to the Viimsi municipal government.
The presentation covered four main areas of work: promoting safe and sustainable modes of transport in kindergartens and schools; developing a traffic safety campaign concept for school areas; creating a concept for a traffic education park; and conducting counts and analyses of light traffic users.
In spring and autumn, students carried out fieldwork, including counts of pedestrians and cyclists, to determine how many people use Viimsi’s light traffic paths and which modes of transport they prefer. The collected data will help the municipal government better plan mobility infrastructure that meets the actual needs of the local community.
“The municipality gains valuable input in the form of data and insights, as well as information needed to influence traffic behaviour and improve traffic safety,” said Rait Parve, Transport Specialist who coordinated the project on behalf of the municipal government. He emphasised that the cooperation has significant practical value both for the community and for the students, who gain hands-on experience in applying research in real-life contexts.
Parve added that the cooperation was efficient and results-oriented. “For TTK, it is important that students’ work does not remain merely an academic assignment, but creates added value in the real traffic environment or contributes to positive changes in traffic behaviour. For us, it was particularly valuable to gain up-to-date insights into mobility patterns in Viimsi, especially regarding the use of light traffic routes. This data will support future planning and help us make decisions that promote safe and smooth mobility throughout the municipality.”
