Architecture office Molumba wins the competition, dormitory and study building at Mõdriku

The entry titled “The Court” presented by the architecture office Molumba was declared the winner of the architecture competition organized for the new dormitory and study building for TTK UAS’ Institute of Service Economy located at the municipality of Mõdriku. The authors of the winning project are Karli Luik, Johan Tali and Harri Kaplan

The jury said that the winning concept has a high quality modern architectural language while still being respectful of the existing historical surroundings. According to Tarmo Sildeberg, the Vice-Rector for Development of TTK UAS, the task the architects faced was rather challenging. “The new building will be built inside the manor complex from the 18th century. All the competition works were of very high level and the decision was not easy. The winning project stood out for balancing the practical solutions with the aesthetic and historical context,” explained the Vice-Rector for Development. The historical manor complex is very important to the local community and hopefully, in cooperation with the architects the selected solution will meet the expectations of all parties.

Karli Luik from Molumba Architects said that Mõdriku inspired with its historical, cultural, natural and academic layers. “All theses layers make it possible to create a very diverse environment where the new accentuates the old and completes it. As architects, we try to contribute not only to the space, but also to the sustainable development,” added Luik. “It is a pleasure to be a part of a project that helps along the regional development. As the building is made from wood, the local resources can be used and the building life cycle can be made more energy efficient,” said Luik.

Accommodation services are of high importance when organizing studies outside bigger cities as there is a lack of the necessary volume in the rental market. The aim of the new building is to offer accommodation for 116 student and visitors (staff or foreign students). Additionally, the building will have its own kitchen for food service and have enough room to host bigger conferences or seminars.

The Institute of Service Economy was formed in the fall of 2019 after Lääne-Viru College was merged with TTK UAS. The new institute is located in Mõdriku, in Lääne-Viru County. The Institute which has  about 700 students offers additionally applied research, in-service training and counselling to to public and private entities.
