The work of Vassili Rõnin, a student of construction geodesy, dealing with underground geodetic works at the Narva oil shale quarry in Ida-Viru County was declared the best graduation thesis of TTK UAS in 2021.

According to Aivars Alt, the director of the Institute of Civil Engineering, the thesis describes with great detail the peculiarities of underground geodesy. “The author Vassili Rõnin has really put the described work into practice during his traineeships and made a lot of research with foreign literature, the part describing the geodetic measurements is the original work of the student.”

Alt says that Rõnin’s thesis also carries a practical value as there is no study literature on underground geodetics in Estonian and the aim of the thesis was to use it in the future as study material as the geodetic works and measurements are universal.

Additionally, the author demonstrates good knowledge of geology by giving an overview of the geological structure of the Narva quarry and the technology of mining.

The thesis was supervised by Raivo Ranne, leading lecturer of the Institute of Civil Engineering.
