TTK’s renovated auditorium combines historic building and contemporary interior architecture

Following an extensive renovation, the main building auditorium of TTK University of Applied Sciences, which reopened in the autumn, has quickly become an integral venue for university life. The renewal of the university’s most representative space marks a significant milestone in the long-term renovation of the main building.

The new interior architectural concept, designed by Studio ARGUS, skillfully introduces a contemporary spatial solution into the otherwise restrained historical Stalinist building. “The impressive auditorium is designed in light tones, while the entrance and the stage are accentuated in black, creating a strong contrast with the rest of the space,” explains interior architect Margit Argus.

According to Tarmo Sildeberg, Vice-Rector for Development at TTK, the renovation also focused on improving the auditorium’s usability and functionality. “The previous renovation of the auditorium took place more than 15 years ago,” Sildeberg notes. “The space had become worn, and in the meantime, developments in sound and presentation technology have been considerable.”

As part of the works, the ventilation system was upgraded, and the load-bearing floor structures were opened to improve sound insulation and correct structural settling that had occurred over time. Particular attention was paid to acoustics. “The new ceiling incorporates sound-absorbing insulation panels and acoustic plaster,” Sildeberg explains. “Energy efficiency was also a key consideration during construction—we replaced outdated windows and upgraded the lighting.”

The stage has likewise been given a completely new look and function, transforming it into a modern black box solution. “The new, user-friendly sound, lighting, and multimedia technology has significantly expanded the range of uses for the hall. The auditorium has already hosted conferences, formal gala events, and even high-energy performances—the feedback so far has been overwhelmingly positive,” says Sildeberg.

“The renovation of the school’s most representative room marks a very important stage in the gradual renewal of the entire main building, which is now nearing completion. By the start of the new academic year, we also plan to renovate the library located on level 0 and create a functional and comfortable collaboration and co-creation area for students,” Sildeberg adds.
