Japan is one of the most seismically active countries in the world, making earthquake resilience a key consideration in architecture and construction. In her lecture, Yukiko Nakamura will explore what we can learn from the damage caused by past earthquakes in Japan and how these lessons can inform the design and construction of more resilient buildings.

Yukiko Nakamura graduated in architecture from Yokohama National University and received her PhD from the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Tokyo in 1999. She went on to work as a research assistant and lecturer at Niigata University. Since 2011, she has been an Associate Professor at Chiba University.

Her research focuses on the seismic resilience of buildings and the analysis of earthquake damage. Seismic resilience is also a compulsory subject for architecture students at Japanese universities, reflecting the importance of earthquake-resistant design in Japan.
